It seems like every time we turn around, there’s another notification on our smartphone to run an update. It can be a hassle, it can be annoying, but it’s also necessary. Many people put off phone updates or avoid them completely, but we’re here to tell you that’s not a great idea.

The number one reason you should stay on top of your phone updates is because of security. Software systems are incredibly complex and none are perfect – flaws exist. Hackers know this and they try hard day in and day out to exploit those imperfect software systems to get your information. It’s only a matter of time before someone, somewhere figures out one of those flaws. So, to keep all of us safe and to stay ahead of cyber criminals, when a flaw is made known one way or another, it’s fixed. Here’s the catch: for that fix to be applied to your device, you have to run the software update.

These software updates need to be done for your phone’s operating system and your applications. All of the applications you have on your phone have a certain degree of information on them that you need to keep relatively private. One reason many people skip app updates is because there aren’t many new features, but like we said, that’s not the most important reason to stay on top of your updates. Changes in functionality and design are great, but your security is more important. You can turn on automatic updates for your applications if you choose. We recommend this because of just how much more protected you’ll be if these updates are taken care of for you.

If you’re an average smartphone user, your device carries around a lot of information. Banking information on banking apps, company data on your email or other company apps, your vacation plans and whereabouts on your social media apps, and so much more can be accessed through your smartphone. Identity theft is much less likely to happen from a misplaced paper document than it is by someone accessing your phone.

There is a myth that an operating system update will make your phone slower or less responsive. This is false. After running an update, your phone should run smoother and faster. If you’re having through with your phone running slow or bombing out, try giving it a restart with at least 10 seconds of it being completely off.
