Tropical storm Harvey and the destruction it’s causing has been weighing heavy on the hearts and minds of many Americans. Luckily, there is something you can do. Donating food and clothing to places like the Houston Food Bank is always great, but what a lot of organizations need is money to make sure the right resources are making it to the right places. Contributing to the relief effort has been made pretty simple by technology and we have a list of awesome charities and organization you can donate to.
1.Text the American RedCross
Text HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10 to the American RedCross. If your thank you and confirmation texts take a little while to get to you, that’s because they’ve had a huge wave of donations and their system is a little backed up.
2. Text the Salvation Army
Text STORM to 51555 to donate to the Salvation Army for Harvey relief.
3. Text the United Way of Greater Houston
Text UWFLOOD to 41444 to contribute to immediate needs of the community as well as long-term services like minor home repair.
4. Visit the Hurrican Harvey Relief Fund Website
This relief fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. By visiting their website, you can easily choose how much you want to donate.
5. Text Carter BloodCare
This organization covers hospitals in North, Central, and East Texas. Text DONATE4LIFE to 444-999.
Each of these organizations is already making a huge impact on the people affected by Harvey. Sending your donations to these organizations over other relief funds that pop up for Harvey is preferred because these newer organizations won’t have the infrastructure to make sure your dollars are making a difference. To make sure another charity you might find is legitimate, you can check Charity Navigator for a list of organizations that are providing relief for Harvey.
If the photos on Facebook of stranded and helpless animals has pulled at your heartstrings, you can donate to the Houston Humane Society or the San Antonio Humane Society to support their growing need as they take on waves of displaced or lost pets.
No matter how large or small your contribution may be, know you’re making a difference in another person’s life in their greatest hour of need.
